Our bench in Yerevan

Who we are

A small atelier in Yerevan that makes silver you can wear every day.

Aurelliani is run by Davit Davoyan. We work in 925 sterling silver, gold-plated silver and natural stones, and we finish every piece by hand. Some designs carry Armenian motifs, the vine, the cross, the letters of our alphabet. Others are plain and modern. All of them are made to be worn, not kept in a drawer.

The maker

Made at one bench, by hand

Our pieces are made in a small workshop in Yerevan. A design starts as a wax model or a strip of silver. It is cast or formed by hand, filed, soldered, set with its stone if it has one, and polished until the surface is clean and even. Then it is stamped 925 and checked once more before it goes into its box.

No two pieces come out exactly alike. That is the point.

Good silver should feel light on the hand and heavy in meaning.Davit Davoyan

The bench

How a piece is made

Six steps, all of them by hand. It is why an in-stock piece ships in 1 to 3 business days and a made-to-order or engraved piece takes 1 to 2 weeks.

  1. Cast or formed

    Cast or formed

A design starts as a wax model that is cast in silver, or as a strip of silver bent and shaped by hand at the bench.

  2. Filed

    Filed

The rough casting is cleaned up with files and emery until every edge sits right and nothing catches on the skin.

  3. Soldered

    Soldered

Posts, jump rings, bails and bezels are joined with silver solder and a small flame. A good joint disappears.

  4. Stone set

    Stone set

A natural stone is seated in its bezel or prongs and the metal is pushed over it by hand so it stays put for years.

  5. Polished

    Polished

Several passes on the wheel, from coarse to fine, until the surface is clean and even. Matte pieces get a brushed finish instead.

  6. Stamped 925

The hallmark goes on last, inside the band or on the back. Then the piece is checked once more and goes into its box.

Why Armenia

Here, silver is a family trade.

Armenia has worked silver and gold for a very long time. In Yerevan, jewelers' benches sit in the same streets as the bakeries, and at the Vernissage market the silver stalls run the length of the rows. Many makers learned at the bench of a parent or an uncle.

The motifs come from that older world. The pomegranate, for abundance. The eternity sign, a wheel of curved rays carved on stone crosses for centuries. The letters of the Armenian alphabet, each one a small drawing. The twin peaks of Ararat, which you can see from the city on a clear day.

That is what you get with a piece from here: an old craft, done by people who grew up around it.

Here, silver is a family trade.
